Clearly The Best Sounding LP
Playback
comes from a turntable that is absolutely immune to
acoustic feedback coming from your speakers as well as
mechanical vibration from any path back to your table.
Mechanical Vibration Isolation has to be job #1 for a
Turntable. It goes with out saying it will play at the right
speed exactly.

The Tone Arm has Job #2. It must provide rigid support
for the cartridge and yet be frictionless as it tracks the
grooves in the lateral plane and maintain constant stylus
force as it tracks any warps on the Record.

Your Cartridge has Job #3. Only when Jobs one and two
are done just right can your Cartridge shine
. The
Cartridge has to follow the groove and generate an AC
voltage which exactly matches the change in the groves
modulation and the rate of change of the grooves
modulation.
Clearly then the closer the stylus on the cartridge is to
the cutting stylus that made the master the closer your
cartridge  will be to tracking what was originally
recorded.  It should go without saying but I will say it
anyway that the flatter the frequency response of the
cartridge is the truer its fidelity will be to what was
originally recorded.
The S.O.T.A. Cosmos Turntable meets criteria #1 in spades and does so while looking
beautiful. While it is certainly not an inexpensive Turntable at a retail price of $6,660 it is
about a tenth  the price of the other tables that are as good as it is.

The new Ortofon RS 309 D Tone Arm has got to be one of the best sounding Arms ever built.
It is a full 12" and like the SME V it uses a frictionless spring at the pivot to develop it's stylus
force, which is the only stylus force method that maintains constant force even while tracking
record warps. Of course the Cosmos Vacuum and Record clamp will flatten most records.
Still if the RS 309 cost $5000 or more like the SME it would be worth it but at half that price
its a steal. This Arm is suitable for the worlds best cartridges and not surprisingly the very
best is made by Ortofon.

The best cartridge would have a stylus shape that exactly matched the cutting stylus.
This is the Ortofon MC Windfeld at a price of $3750 it isn't cheap but it is the very best
money can buy.  This cartridge is everything a vinyl loving purist could want.

Now this is a $12,800 system that competes with $100,000 systems. Even with a 20%
discount it would still be a very expensive system.

We can get much of this systems performance by not going to the top of each category.

The S.O.T.A. Sapphire gets very close to the performance of the Cosmos and was the first
S.O.T.A. table designed and really put
S.O.T.A on the map in the 1980's. At $2400 it is shoe horn
into high-fidelity vinyl playback
The Ortofon AS 212 S is a gravity balanced 9" Tone Arm which is world class in every way  and a
steal of a tone arm at $1649 considering it easily competes with the SME IV.Vi that is over $3,000.

OK so here we sit at $4,049 and we have put together a turntable that will provide the
overwhelming majority of performance of the worlds finest turntables and the question is what
cartridge to put on it.  The answer comes from your budget as this tone arm / turntable
combination is good enough for any cartridge you can afford. It will get the most from the Ortofon
MC Rondo Blue at $800 which I will include at the $4,049 price. Or you can upgrade to any Ortofon
Cartridge you can afford and take a $800 credit towards the still more amazing more expensive
Ortofon.

$4,049 still too much for your turntable budget today?  No Problem Denon to the rescue.

The Denon DP 500M offers outstanding performance for $700 and even comes with a dust cover,
which is an extra on the S.O.T.A. tables.  Its tone arm is good enough for some of the best
Ortofons' out there. Normally in this price range you probably don't have a Moving coil phono
section so the Ortofon Moving Magnet Cartridges are spectacular.

Go for the Bronze with the Ortofon 2M Bronze a spectacular Moving Magnet Cartridge that
competes easily with other manufacturers Moving Coil Cartridges and one I prefer for Rock and
Jazz personally and you can add it for just $289 more so for $989 you can have one amazing LP
Play Back system.
